For many years, Camp Parsons has been blessed with outstanding volunteers and alumni who would take time out of their busy schedules to come to camp and help build or repair facilities and equipment that would be put to use for the summer program. Since the early 80’s however, this group has been formalized into the AWP.
What makes the AWP unique? Seldom will you find dedicated scouters and friends of scouting who will give one weekend each month to come and stay at camp and undertake some of the most challenging projects we can throw at them. One of the first projects completed recently was started by the West Seattle Work Party group and added onto through the years by the AWP was the boat house. For years camp had to put all its aquatic equipment into the dining hall for winter storage, and during the summer, there was no good place to store equipment. When the boathouse was first developed, it created shelter and an excellent facility to place equipment. It is now an enclosed, insulated facility in which year round work can continue. This is due to the work of the AWP.
Some of the other projects include building Mystery Beach Lodge, the Health Lodge and Doctor’s Cabin, Staff bathroom facilities, new Campsite bathroom facilities, Metropolitan Junior, Campfire Bowl, and on and on. Many projects were small, many are big, regardless, they all benefit scouting and the program at Camp Parsons.
If you are interested in helping out, we usually meet monthly at camp. Saturday breakfast through Sunday lunch are provided for your hard work. You are welcome to spend Saturday night and we usually can get you into one of the heated buildings to spend the night. Although families are welcome to come, we may not have full sleeping facilities for whole families (after all, one family can take up 5 sleeping spaces in one building) and most of your time will be taken up with work projects. If you have a particular talent, or if you have access to certain equipment that would be beneficial that would be great too. Also, if you can only come up for a few hours or only a day, we are happy to have you.
